Ways to Improve Communication Skills
How Can I Improve my Child's Communication Skills?
Young kids are just learning how to interact with others and make friends. This may be a daunting task for those who are not as well versed as others in their class. Improving your child’s conversational and communication skills will help them in the present and the future when these skills become much more valuable in regard to the workplace or society as a whole. Here is a list of ways in which you as a parent could help improve these skills to help benefit them in the present and future:
Talk to Your Child
This may seem like a no-brainer, as talking to them helps develop communication; however, doing this regularly encourages your child to speak more often and may even help them communicate more fluently. Additionally, talking to your child and asking for their opinions will help them become more comfortable opening up.
Listen to Your Child
One of the most essential skills to ensure your child learns is listening, and this can be taught through demonstration. Asking your child about a specific aspect of their day and then posing questions teaches your child how to listen while providing a way for them to become aware of just how important listening is. By asking questions, it shows that you are interested in what your child has to say, allowing them to feel more comfortable.
Read with Your Child
What’s most important is not what you are reading but that you are doing it together. Even if they chose the same story every night, it only means that your child is developing a better sense of the character and the situations occurring within the story. After finishing it, talk to your child about what they liked/did not like or what they thought would happen but did not, and generate a conversation to make them feel more willing to share their thoughts.
Ask for Your Child’s Opinion
Communication requires children to share their feelings and express their thoughts about the topic. Simply asking your child to give their input on daily decisions will provide them with a sense of importance and knowing that their voices are heard! Ask your child questions that involve the use of “I think” or “I feel” so that they can feel included, all while practicing their communication skills.
